Are you a kayak or a canoe?

In last week's Gilmore Girls, Emily likens herself to a canoe: she needs her partner's help so she can steer straight. Contrastly, Lorelai is like a kayak: she can steer by herself, and has for many years. This is the softer, tipsier side of Emily that's rarely seen. She tells Lorelai that she's done very well for herself without a husband, and that even though Lorelai's marriage broke up, "it's not such a disaster."
